Snoring is a symptom of Sleep Apnea which is a condition with grave consequences like heart disorders, stroke, poor control of diabetes and hypertension, said Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) ENT expert T.V. Rajini Kanth.
Addressing a press conference here on Saturday Dr. Rajini Kanth said that a lot of research was being done on Sleep Apnea and it could be treated through Coblation, the latest system in which the excess tissue from the air track which was the cause of snoring and Sleep Apnea was removed in a safe way.
The doctor said that the KIMS recently acquired Coblation equipment, Coblator-II, the first hospital in coastal Andhra to do so. The equipment was effective and less painful than conventional surgery, heat or laser treatment.
Over a long period efficient systems were being used to “kill or shrink” the excess tissue in the nose, throat and the voice box that obstructed the free flow of air while the patient was sleeping causing them to snore and have Sleep Apnea.
In some acute cases of Sleep Apnea breathing gets obstructed 100 times an hour and sleep was more tiring than being refreshing for them. Such people wake up tired and easily prone to irritation, or suffered memory loss, Dr. Rajini Kanth said.
All people who snore do not suffer from Sleep Apnea, but all who have Sleep Apnea snore, he said. While there were several reasons for people developing the disorder, obesity was one of the primary reasons. With Coblation, often the patient could be discharged the same day, he said. KIMS medical director M. Yanadi Naidu was present.
